Well Don!

Newsletter #4 - New Address, New Rates, Windows Vista

Howdy! As you've noticed, the wellDON!net newsletter isn't quite monthly yet, but I'm getting better. We've covered Microsoft Updates, computer backups, and Microsoft newsletters and Windows support. I hope that you've found the newsletters worthwhile. I'll continue to strive to get them out more regularly. And I can't emphasize enough, if you're still living on borrowed time and want to set up an automated backup process, please call me to set up an appointment. Don't get caught without a backup!

Change of Address

Many of you have already received the good news, but I bought a condo in July. My new address is:

11106 Valleydale Drive #C
Dallas, TX 75230
Should you need to drop off your computer, my website now has a map and driving directions.

New Rate Structure

I may as well acknowledge it - yes the timing of my rate increase and the change of address is kind of funny. But I haven't raised my tech support rates since I implemented the trip charge two years ago, and my web development rates have remained the same since I started four years ago. So it's time for a little increase . . .

My tech support / computer coaching rate will now be $60 / hour. I will still charge $30 / trip if I come to your home. But there's a silver lining here - instead of charging an hour minimum, it will now be only a half hour minimum. So, if you have a few quick questions, instead of paying $80 minimum to get me to your house, it's now a $60 minimum ($30 trip charge + $30 for a half hour). Many of you keep an ongoing list of questions / issues for me, so now you won't have to wait as long to have me come over and help out with those issues. After the first half hour, I will charge in 10 minute increments to keep the math easy.

Related to this - phone support is always available, but I want to make sure that everyone's expectations are the same. For my regular clients, if I can answer a question quickly (less than 5 minutes), I'm happy to do so. However, many support calls last longer than this. For any support phone call that lasts more than 5 minutes, I'll simply log the time and either send you an invoice or add that amount to your next invoice.

Lastly, I've left my website development and maintenance rates alone for the last 4 years. I am raising those rates to $75 / hour with a half hour minimum.

If you have any questions about these rates, please don't hesitate to ask.

Windows Vista

Some of you have heard the term Vista and are asking what it's all about. Windows Vista is the next Microsoft operating system. Believe it or not, but Windows XP has already been around for four years. Microsoft is supposedly going to great lengths to make sure that the transition to Vista is smoother than the transition to XP was. If you'd like to learn more about Windows Vista, check out the Windows Vista: Experience It site. If you've been thinking about a new computer, it's worth considering the wait until the end of this year to get one with the new operating system. It promises to be a significant enhancement.

And for those who aren't ready to upgrade yet, you can still get some of the Vista experience when Internet Explorer 7 and Windows Media Player 11 come out soon. And watch for Microsoft Office 2007 to be released soon as well.
