Well Don!

Newsletter #16 - Spyware, Broadband Connections

What is Spyware?

The three top reasons we get called by clients are:

  1. Their computer has reached the end of its life, and they need to replace it.
  2. They have been infected by spyware, so the computer is no longer running normally.
  3. Their internet connection isn't working.

Most of you have probably heard of spyware, but don't quite know what it does or how it affects your computer. Windows has a pretty simple explanation.

While some spyware is only a nuisance and relatively harmless, we occasionally run across a computer that is so deeply infected that the operating system must be reinstalled. This is the worst-case scenario. The good news is that there are programs out there that can help protect you from getting to this point. We recommend a few programs, including Webroot Spysweeper and Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007. Both of these programs have real-time / proactive protection, automatic updates, and the ability to configure a scan on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. While there are free versions of spyware programs - such as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware Free - they are limited in their abilities to protect you before you get infected.

There's one other thing you should know, and it definitely falls into the "ignorance is bliss" category - we have not found just one program that will catch and protect you from 100% of all the spyware and viruses out there. In our experience, we typically run 2 or 3 spyware and virus scans to remove as many infections as possible. So, in addition to having a good antivirus program that is regularly / automatically updated, we advise that you purchase one of the above programs. For even better protection, we recommend also installing one of the free programs. In this way, you can have an automatic daily scan and manually run the other.

While Wired PC Guys certainly exists to provide a means for us to make a living, we also like the thought of equipping our clients to solve the simpler of the problems that they face in day-to-day use of their computers. Along those lines, if you've never checked out the Troubleshooting part of our site, I'd strongly encourage you to do so. Of particular interest:
